Delayed online stock prices may soon be a thing of the past

At Google, we get excited about making all kinds of information accessible to everyone. The more up-to-date the information, the more valuable it is. This is particularly true in the world of finance; information, and timing of that information, is money. Today, real-time quotes are not freely and easily available on the web. Some websites offer one real-time quote at a time, but typically only after you have enrolled in a service and/or signed a complicated legal agreement. Other sites approach the problem differently and show you streaming delayed data, but that doesn't solve the problem either -- it masks it. What's really important is getting free, easy and fast access to real-time quotes so you know how the market or your company is doing now, not as of twenty minutes ago.

The program *MAY* be autoupdating now

Ok, so after some serious recoding, I think I have the program auto-updating the stats and leaderboard every 15 minutes. You may see a delay in the reflected leaderboard totals of up to 15 minutes depending on how this works, but it should provide a fairly accurate update all day long, Monday through Friday. Keep an eye on it, and let me know if anything goes wonky - for example, every so often a stock may update with a '0' if there is too much network traffic. It SHOULD resolve itself on the next update - but if it doesn't drop me a note!

Whew, off to do some paid work now :)

Delay, explained...

Sorry I'm behind folks - my soon-to-be-ex hosting company decided this would be a good time to take my database server offline WITHOUT TELLING ME. So having spent the entire day in a flat out panic, I am now coming down off the roof and able to get updates done.

I can't wait to move to another hosting company, jeez louise. Found one today and we're just starting on the whole moving process, hopefully this will all be something I can laugh (or cry) about in a couple weeks.

Good for you, Al. I'm proud of you. Remember that the book is a couple
of years old now but its concepts are still valid. What is the market
trying to tell us when the Dow Jones Industrials are making new highs
but the Dow Jones Transports are not (or at least the last time I looked
they were not). Time will tell. Remember, we're trying to learn
investing here, not doing gambling because stock market gamblers usually
lose in the long term. Also, always diversify your stock portfolio. Dad

I read the introduction to The Message of The Markets. It took me a long time, but you know what? The more I read it, the more I understand it. Just the introdoction changed my veiw on the stock market completly. Look out Grandpa Ken. Look out aunt Erika.Its a whole new ballgame.

if the numbers don't look right, try refreshing the page once by pressing CTRL-F5. I'm still working out some refresh bugs but the math should be correct... should have it all worked out by Monday so that the page auto updates at regular intervals throughout the day.

Stock picks listed for 1-3-07

Well folks, your picks have been purchased at today's closing prices. Since we have more players, running a LOT more stocks, I have put a bit of work into more automation for the site this time around. One positive is that I no longer have to update daily totals - only log in your buy and sell orders. This should make things a bit easier overall for me.

I have also changed the sidebar to show both the current price AND number of shares held - this way if there's an error, we can find it quicker. I think it will be interesting to see how things progress - please keep in mind that any buys posted BEFORE close of market will be bought at closing price that day. And buys posted AFTER close of market will be bought THE NEXT DAY at close. The same holds true for sells.

New site and stock lists coming SOON

I have received almost everyone's stock picks and will be working tomorrow on updating the site ready for our next round. I hope you're all as excited as I am! If I need any changes I will notify you tomorrow.
